Schumann's Fantasy op. 17 - dedicated to Liszt - and Liszt's B minor sonata - dedicated to Schumann - were important milestones in their respective careers, representing each composer's way of managing the heritage of the classical sonata, sparking the evolution of a form easily considered to be unchangeable. This is a live recording from a concert which also included Chopin's Ballade op 38 (dedicated to Schumann) and Etude op. 10 no 6 (dedicated to Liszt).

Franck - Symphonic Variations, Strauss - Burlesque

These two short works for piano and orchestra were both composed in 1885, when César Franck was already over sixty, and Strauss just twenty-one. Franck's Symphonic variations Fis formal and profound, fusing three traditions: solo concerto, symphony and variation form. Strauss' Burlesque is an exuberant waltz. 'Whenever I play it I conjure up the image of couples waltzing at an aristocratic ball where everyone is dressed in the most exquisite and fine fashion', says Ekaterina Litvintseva.

Beethoven’s ‘Appassionata’ is situated roughly at the midpoint of his output, and is one of his most famous works. One hundred years later, while studying with Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg composed his first and only piano sonata. Another fifty years later, Boulez began his Third sonata, an ambitious project which later underwent a long process of revision and polishing, before being abandoned. This recording by Florent Boffard is the first to include the unfinished fragments.
